Street Intervention

Assignment 2(B) -- Group Work

In this assignment, we were given an area in Kuala Lumpur and required to select a street to conduct site study on. All the information was to be presented on 4-6 A1 sized boards.

The site study included:

After conducting the site study, we needed to come up with a street intervention that relates to our site study and then build a 2D modal of it on an A2 sized surface.

PROCESS

Before going for our first site visit, we started off by observing the area(Jalan Tun HS Lee) using Google Earth and Google Maps. My group members and I had several group discussions, either in school or even through Skype. We even created a checklist and printed out maps so that we could take notes during our site visit.

On the day of our site visit, we met at the Pasar Seni LRT station at 7 AM and head off to take a look at Jalan Tun HS Lee. Because our street was 1.8km long, we decided to split ourselves into 3 groups so that we could gather information more efficiently.  We jotted down details of our surroundings, took pictures of shadows during different times, observed traffic around the area, etc. Through the initial preparation of our site, we were able to recognize the area and take down information in a fast and organized manner.

From what we gathered during the site visit, we were required to present the information on A1 sized presentation boards. Our initial layouts were done on butter paper as it was more convenient to carry around and also to lower the total cost of the project. Ms. Reene and Mr. Azim would give us suggestions on how to improve our method of presenting our info and its relevance to the final outcome of the project.

As we started to finalize the layout of our board, we visited our site a few more times to make sure we didn't leave out any information and gather more pictures to help our board with visualizing our site. We also had to focus on coming up with intervention ideas that would fit into our site area. This challenge proved to be the most difficult and time-consuming task through the whole project. Our ideas were constantly rejected, and by the time it was less than a week to present our work, we were still clueless about what to do.

The last week before the presentation, Taylor's University had become our home. We stayed until 3 to 4 AM in the morning to complete the boards as possible and would head to a group members apartment to bathe and rest. This routine allowed us to finish everything except our intervention. Fortunately, we had help from a senior that listened to our troubles and guided us towards the right direction without spoonfeeding us the answers.
